Breathtaking Wedding Photography Locations in Queenstown (That I Keep Coming Back To)

One of the absolute joys of being based in the South Island is that I’m spoiled for choice when it comes to landscapes. As a wedding and elopement photographer, I get to shoot in some of the most spectacular places in New Zealand. No matter how many times I revisit them, they always deliver something different.

Whether you’re planning an elopement, engagement shoot, or just dreaming up a future trip, here are 10 of my favourite photography locations in and around Queenstown, Wanaka, and beyond. From iconic peaks to hidden alpine valleys, these places never disappoint.

Cecil Peak – The Ultimate Queenstown Backdrop

Cecil Peak is a go-to for couples who want that “top of the world” feeling. It's accessible only by helicopter and offers panoramic views across Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and The Remarkables. I’ve photographed countless elopements up here, and every single one feels like something out of a dream. Golden tussock grass, big open skies, and that epic Queenstown light make this spot unforgettable.

Vanguard Peak – Remote, Wild and Peaceful

Vanguard Peak is a lesser-known gem with big mountain energy. It’s also accessed by helicopter and offers a quieter, more untouched vibe than other peaks. The terrain is rugged and open, and incredibly photogenic, especially with soft alpine light spilling across the ridgelines. If you want privacy and a real sense of escape, Vanguard is one of the best options out there.

Glenorchy – Misty Lake and Movie-Like Scenery

I photograph in Glenorchy often, and it still blows me away. Sitting at the top of Lake Wakatipu, it offers incredible variety. You’ll find moody beech forests, braided riverbeds, open paddocks, and towering mountain ranges. The scenery changes with the light, the seasons, and even the wind. It’s perfect for couples who want something grounded, organic, and beautifully cinematic. Paradise Valley, in particular, is one of my all-time favourite spots.

Moke Lake – Stillness and Reflection

Moke Lake is a favourite for couples wanting a peaceful, tucked-away feel. Just a short drive from Queenstown, it offers still water, mountain reflections, and a sense of calm that is hard to describe. Morning shoots are especially stunning here, when everything is quiet and the lake mirrors the sky. It’s one of those places where time slows down in the best way.

Clay Cliffs – Bold, Dramatic and Different

Located near Omarama, the Clay Cliffs feel like something from another world. Tall and jagged with a raw, sculptural beauty, they make a striking and dramatic backdrop for portraits. I love shooting here at golden hour when the light dances across the formations. It’s an ideal spot for couples who want something bold, unique, and completely unforgettable.

Snow Farm – A Quiet Winter Wonderland

Snow Farm, perched above Cardrona Valley, is the ultimate snow shoot location. With wide, white terrain, snow-covered trees, and soft rolling hills, it’s perfect for couples wanting that clean, minimal, wintry look. It feels peaceful and removed, and the light is always gentle. I’ve photographed intimate elopements and cozy engagement sessions here, and it always feels magical.

Queenstown Lakefront – Classic Beauty, Zero Hassle

The Queenstown lakefront might be one of the easiest spots to photograph, but it’s still incredibly beautiful. I love shooting here at sunrise or during blue hour when the lake is glassy and still. The mountains across the water make a perfect backdrop, and the whole area has a calm, timeless feel. It’s perfect for spontaneous sessions or low-key portraits with maximum impact.

Arrowtown Valley – Autumn at Its Best

Arrowtown wedding photography

Arrowtown is at its most famous in autumn, when the trees turn vibrant shades of orange, gold, and red. But even outside of that season, the valley has a special charm. Historic cottages, mountain trails, and quiet riverbanks make it ideal for slower, story-rich photo sessions. The colours, the textures, the mood — it all comes together beautifully here.

Cardrona Valley – Rustic and Timeless

Cardrona Valley has a rustic charm that feels both relaxed and romantic. Think winding gravel roads, golden tussock hills, old buildings with history, and soft light that wraps around everything. It’s beautiful year-round, but the colours during autumn are next level. It’s a great spot for couples who want something with a little character and warmth.

Crown Range – Easy Access with Big Views

The Crown Range road between Queenstown and Wanaka is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand, and also one of the most photogenic. I love pulling over at the lookout points for windswept portraits, or walking a little off-road to capture those layered mountain shots that feel expansive and grand. In winter, it transforms into a snowy wonderland. In summer, it’s all golden grasses and soft evening light.
