Photos in Tekapo?
The Mackenzie area is arguably one of the best places in the world to get married and have professional photos taken. We have lakes, vistas, and snow! There really is something for everyone, in every season possible! This region is fast becoming the destination of choice for adventurous couples. Surrounded by only your favourite humans or just the imposing scenery, a Mackenzie wedding allows you to enjoy a day that celebrates your relationship, the beginning of your marriage.
I travel regularly around the South Island. I offer free travel within the South Island with the help of my trusty little caravan and Ravioli the Rav4 :D
Tekapo Lupins
Every summer, the shoreline of Lake Tekapo transforms into a sea of pink, violet, and electric blue. The lupins bloom against milky turquoise water and wide Mackenzie skies, creating one of New Zealand’s most recognisable landscapes. It’s breathtaking. It’s romantic. And it’s surprisingly tricky to photograph well.
That’s where I come in.
The best season to see the lupins
Lupins typically bloom from mid-November through early January, with December often delivering the most vibrant displays. The exact timing shifts each year depending on rainfall and temperature. Knowing when to book is everything. I keep a close eye on bloom progress so you don’t arrive too early to sparse stems or too late to fading petals.
Golden hour is magic here. Sunrise offers calm water, softer light, and fewer crowds. Sunset brings warm glow across the basin and dramatic skies. I help you choose the right time of day for the mood you want, soft and romantic or bold and cinematic.
Where to find the best lupins
Most people head straight to the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd and yes, it’s stunning. But it’s also busy. I know quieter stretches of the Lake Tekapo shoreline where the flowers are just as beautiful, without tourists wandering into your frame.
Because I work in the lower South Island, I understand the landscape, the wind patterns, and the light movement across the lake. If conditions shift, I can pivot quickly to sheltered bays or elevated viewpoints. You’re not just booking a camera. You’re booking local knowledge and calm, confident direction.
Russell lupins were introduced decades ago and are now considered invasive in parts of the South Island. They outcompete native plants and alter fragile river ecosystems. As beautiful as they are, they’re not native to this landscape.
Because of that, I’m intentional about how I photograph them. We avoid damaging surrounding areas, stay mindful of fragile riverbeds, and tread lightly. You get stunning images without contributing to environmental harm.
Seeing the lupins safely
Tekapo weather changes quickly. Strong winds, uneven ground, and roadside parking can all present challenges. I’ll guide you to safe access points, stable footing, and sheltered spots. Especially important if you’re in a wedding dress, bringing children, or planning an elopement.
Photographing the Tekapo lupins should feel joyful, not stressful. When you hire me, you’re choosing someone who knows the timing, the light, the hidden corners, and how to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
The lupins may only bloom for a short window each year but with the right photographer, the magic lasts forever.
